Two-Color Vest: 200 (300, 300, 300) gr. worsted wt yarn (solid color)
200 (300, 300, 300) gr. worsted wt yarn (hand-dyed contrasting color)
Single Color Vest: 400 (400, 500, 500) gr worsted wt yarn
Size 9 - 16" , 24" and 29" circular needles, Size 9 straight needles
Stitch Holders, markers
Gauge:
4 sts = one inch in garter st
Abbreviations:
SSK: sl 2 sts, one at a time, from left to right needle; then insert left needle into
front of these 2 sts and K them together.
Star: Knit next 3 sts, pass first st over second and third sts
Note:
If the vest is begin made in one color, disregard directions to change colors.
Bottom Border:
For all sizes, with main color CO 16 sts. K 1 row. K 2 rows CC. K 2 rows MC.
Continue alternating two rows CC and MC until 145 (160, 175, 191) ridges MC
have been worked. BO loosely. Do not cut yarn. Leaving last loop on
needle, turn and pick up one st in each ditch between garter ridges across
bottom of strip: 146 (161, 176, 191) sts. Knit 3 rows. BO loosely on right
side. Finish off.
Using MC, pick up 1 st in the ditch bet garter ridges across top of border
146 (161, 176, 191) sts.
Continue as follows: K10, place on st holder, K to last 10 sts, K10.
Next row:K10, place on st holder, P to end. K one row. Begin pattern:

Repeat these 4 rows until piece measures 12 (13, 14, 15) inches (or desired length)
from bottom edge to underarm End by working row 1 (a MC row).
Dividing row: K2 (yo, star) 5 (6, 7, 8) times, K1, (right front) --
P 15 (18, 21, 24), place on holder -- K2, (yo, star) 19 (20, 21, 22) times, K1,
(back) -- P15 (18, 21, 24), place on holder -- K2 (yo, star) 5 (6, 7, 8) times,
K1, place marker (left front).
Next row: Using size 9 straight needles and CC, purl across sts of left front,
cut yarn. Go to end of needle, slip sts of right front onto spare size 9 needle.
Purl these sts with first size 9 straight needle, using a second ball CC, and leaving
sts of back on circular needle, using it as a st holder.
Continue with right and left front neck shaping, working both at the same time,
using 4 balls of yarn.

At 11 inches, P 1 more row MC, bind off with MC.
BACK: Beg with a wrong side row and CC, work pattern as established across sts
of back, without decreases. Work even until back measures 4 rows (2 star st rows) shorter than fronts.
Work pattern as established across first 9 (12, 12, 15) sts (right shoulder), BO
sts of center back until 9 (12, 12, 15) sts remain on left shoulder, work pattern
as est to end of row. Continuing pattern and colors as established, work to match
front arm edges. Bind off. Sew shoulder seams.
Front Bands: Sl sts from holders to size 9 needle. Sl 1, K to end of row.
Repeat this row until front band is long enough to sew to front edges and over
shoulder seam to meet bound-off back neck edge. Bind off sts of band and sew
in place (do not sew ends of bands together). Repeat for right band, making
buttonholes if desired. Buttonhole row: On right side row, sl 1, K4, yo, K2
tog, K to end of row. Repeat buttonholes evenly spaced at front, placing last
buttonhole at beginning of neck shaping.
Armhole finishing: Using size 9 - 24" circular needle, beginning at shoulder
seam, pick up and knit 40 (44) sts along arm edge, knit across sts on holder
at bottom of arm opening, pick up and knit 40 (44) sts along second arm edge.
Do not turn. Purl 1 round. Bind off. Repeat for second armhole.
